In our research we investigate information coding, information processing and memory formation in single neurons and neural networks. In a number of research projects we  focus on two model systems: In the mammalian neocortex we study theoretical principles of neural population coding, system reliability and variability, and motor control. In the insect brain of the honeybee we focus on the dynamics of olfactory processing, and the mechanisms underlying learning, memory formation, and decision making in behavioral paradigms.

We engage in a number of teaching activities at various levels, including teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs, and post-graduate training. Future, current and past activities are listed on our teaching site.

The group Neuroinformatics and Theoretical Neuroscience was founded in 2002 by Dr. Sonja Grün. In 2006 she moved to the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (Wako, Japan) where she is now head of the statistical neuroscience research unit.
